The Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem presents “Let There Be Light”, a new exhibition of ancient oil-lamps in celebration of the Festival of Lights.

Four Wick Bronze Age Oil LampSmall clay oil-lamps open a window to our ancient history. Simple and utilitarian in their form, these lamps were of great importance as the only source of light in the dark.

Byzantine Period lamp with a Cross-shaped handleLet There Be Light displays Jewish, Christian, Samaritan and Islamic oil-lamps that were vital for use in the daily lives and religious rituals in the Holy Land. This exhibition traces the development of oil-lamps over three millennia, from their most primitive and simplistic form, to those more elaborately designed and decorated.

Islamic lantern with lampLamps from the Holy Land and its neighboring regions illuminated homes and temples, and were decorated with various symbols and motifs reflecting the cultures and religions of the people.
