Introductory Gallery - FRAGMENTARY VASE IN THE SHAPE OF HEAD

ca. 450 BCE

(BLMJ 0164)

Painted baked clay
Anatolia, probably Lydia

This splendid vase fragment represents a Lydan of the mid-fifth century BCE wearing huge earrings and with rouged cheeks. Fifth-century vase paintings and terracotta show these long curls, earrings and make-up as characteristic of men rather than women, so this solemn and dramatic face is probably that of a young man.
