A lecture series in partnership with the Israel Exploration Society
“The Bible: The People Behind the Inscriptions”
Prof. Haggai Misgav, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Wednesday | June 3 | 19:00
Finding an inscription in the course of an excavation transforms the entire dig — from a silent film into one with sound. The people behind the story suddenly have a voice, a style, a presence, ambitions. Politics takes on the texture of daily life at military outposts. Society comes face to face with poor harvesters complaining of exploitation. Merchants and their account books come back to life. Even the stories of local prophets are told again. In this lecture, we’ll encounter some of these inscriptions and try, through them, to touch the world of the people of antiquity.
