How does one paint longing? How can memory, yearning, or a sense of place be captured?
The new exhibition “Etched in Time” by artist Shy Abady invites visitors on a visual and emotional journey through landscape, memory, and history.
For the past two decades, Abady (born in Jerusalem, 1965) has explored questions of place, memory, and belonging, drawing on a deep connection to the historical, biblical, and Israeli past, while also engaging with distant geographic landscapes beyond the familiar local scenery.
Using a unique technique of electrical burning and scorching on wooden panels, Abady combines images of landscapes, figures, and historical moments with layers of charcoal and oil paint.
His works create a meeting point between a sun-scorched East and dark Western landscapes, examining how personal and collective memory continues to be engraved into the body of the present.
The exhibition features works from the series “Augusta Victoria” and “Boomerang in the Respiratory Tract,” which deal with exile, trauma, and enduring memory through figures, Jerusalem landscapes, and sites charged with meaning.
Presenting the exhibition at the Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem creates a living dialogue between layers of history and memory — between what has been excavated from the earth and the reality that exists above it.
The exhibition will open on: June 6, 2026
